Since the launch of the new website, a lot of folks have reached out and mentioned that they would love to connect with the people around them more deeply, but are unsure how to actually get started with The Way Back. It can be intimidating to “put yourself out there” and get something like this started. Speaking from experience in implementing The Way Back in various environments, I can tell you that it’s life-changing to move beneath the surface and really be heard and seen for who we truly are.
So, if you’d like to connect more deeply with those around you, but are unsure how to get started, here are 3 steps to ensure your gathering is a brilliant success:
- Determine who to invite. Who would you like to connect with more deeply? This might be your department/team, specific people in your office, neighborhood, building you live in, roommates, senior living center, volunteer organization, church, or school. You might be having a difficult time making friends (it can be so much harder once we’re out of school!) and you’d like to start a The Way Back Meetup to find some new friends. You might want to get beyond surface level conversation with your children, partner, or extended family. You only need one other person in order to have a meaningful The Way Back gathering. And, to keep things intimate, you will want to limit the number to around 20 people.
- Determine when and how to have the gathering. Your tribe can meet whenever works for everyone. We recommend meeting once a week on the same day and time, and allotting 30 minutes from start to finish. In your office, you might choose first thing in the morning, like we did at Chipotle headquarters. Or, you might include it as an icebreaker at the beginning of your weekly status meeting, or maybe lunch time works better. With friends or family, you might choose after dinner as you wind down for the evening.
- Get prepared to ensure your success. Before your first gathering, download the Getting Started Guide and complete the 10-minute interactive training experience.
Above all, believe in yourself. You can do this. Anyone (that includes you!) can start a The Way Back tribe. All you need is a group of engaged individuals with a desire to connect.
